About Citrus Academy
The Citrus Academy is an organisation founded on non-profit grounds that strives to create more opportunities for members of local communities in the field of education. Founded in 2005 by the Citrus Growers’ Association, the academy has been a sole promoter and advocate of the citrus industry in South Africa. As of today, the academy has been responsible for investing 26 million rand into 908 bursaries, and have awarded 324 recipients all over the country.
About the Citrus Academy Bursaries 2023
Citrus Academy is offering generous financial assistance to tertiary students in the form of bursaries for Tertiary Education Support and BEE Bursary Support. These two bursaries are conducted to offer the necessary support for students in tertiary institutions and are conducted to empower members of citrus enterprises by making formal education much more accessible – no matter your background.
As an awardee, you will be responsible for maintaining at least a D-average aggregate and must not fail any subjects that you are taking. Students will be required to spend at least four weeks of vacation work each year, and must work in the citrus industry for a total period of when they received support under the bursary. If you don’t, you will be required to pay back the entire bursary money to the selection committee.
Awardees of the Citrus Academy Bursaries will be entitled to coverage over study-related expenses, tuition costs, on-campus accommodation costs, research fees, and stipend for prescribed study materials.
Citrus Academy Bursaries are awarded for Undergraduate and Postgraduate student each year which studies in related with Agricultural field, specifically the following fields below:
- Plant Pathology
- Horticulture
- Agricultural Production
- Soil Science
- Mechanical Engineering
- Agricultural Management
- Microbiology
- Agricultural Economics
- Plant Production
- Industrial Engineering
- Entomology
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants of the Citrus Academy Bursaries must adhere to a comprehensive eligibility criteria in order to be qualified for the programme. Each of these items will play an integral role in determining whether you have what it takes for the bursary or not. To ensure you end up with a successful application, make sure you meet all of these requirements. Failure to do so might cause disadvantageous consequences towards the overall result of your applications.
The Citrus Academy Bursaries Eligibility Criteria are as follows:
1. Basic Requirements
- Officially recognized as a citizen of South Africa, Swaziland, or Zimbabwe
- Pursuing an education in the agricultural field, as well as related courses (e.g. logistics, entomology)
- Attending a course in an accredited tertiary institution (Universities, Universities of Technology, Colleges) in South Africa
- Note: students are only given financial support from their second year of studies.
2. Criteria for Successful Application
- Shows a Previously Disadvantaged Status
- Study of field is relevant to the bursary
- Displays outstanding academic potential
- Shows requirements for financial aid
- Has prior background in the field of citrus industry
- Preference offered to female candidates
- Shows to have a disability.

Submissions must be processed through the portal provided above. Applications sent through other methods, such as fax or email, will be disqualified by the selection committee.

- ID document for South African citizen
- Passport/ID document for Zimbabwe/Swaziland citizen
- Secondary education results
- Proposed research project for postgraduate students
- Recent tertiary academic record
- Motivational essay.
Closing Date
Applications for the Citrus Academy Bursaries must be submitted before the closing date on 15 September 2022.
To guarantee a spot during the applications, it’s advisable that you begin your registration as soon as possible. This will leave you with a lot more time to reassess the contents of your applications before submitting them.
Announcements will only be made to shortlisted candidates by the very latest before the middle of December. If you have not been notified by then, we regret to inform you that you have not been selected for the programme.
