Dept of Correctional Services Learnerships 2023-2024: Programmes for More than 15 Study Fields Offering Stipend of R3 738,25 per Month

About the Dept of Correctional Services
The South African government’s Department of Correctional Services is in charge of overseeing the country’s prison system. The Department of Correctional Services’ mission is to promote justice, peace, and safety in South Africa by providing effective and compassionate prisoner confinement, as well as criminal offender rehabilitation and social reintegration.

The Department’s strategic goals include strengthening organizational capability for improved service delivery, effective management of business processes to support good governance and ethical administration, provision of a secure ICT infrastructure and business systems, professionalization for effective human resource management and development, and holding remand detainees as well as offering access to restorative justice procedures for offenders and efficient administration and operation of the parole boards.

About the Dept of Correctional Services Learnerships 2023-2024
The Dept of Correctional Services is providing learnerships for individuals inerested in obtaining an FET Certificate (NQF Level 4) in Corrections Services. The Dept of Correctional Services Learnerships are 12-month programs that provide students with the chance to develop their knowledge, abilities, and work experience in the subject of corrections. You will follow a defined curriculum that alternates between theoretical exams and hands-on training sessions performed in actual workplace settings throughout the duration of the program. As you proceed toward a qualification, you will be urged to demonstrate significant improvement under the direction of qualified training providers.

The Department and South Africa hope that the outcome-based learnership will assist learners in filling the skills gap. The learnership is built on an agreement between the service provider, learner, and employer. The Corrections Services Learnership Programme will be available for a full year, including 30% theoretical or instructional learning and 70% on-the-job learning.

A rigorous 30% theoretical learning learning component that involves pistol training in addition to physical education and self-defense instruction will be part of the theoretical learning, which will take place at selected accredited DCS universities. During this training session, free lodging, meals, training materials, and uniforms will be offered. The student must strictly reside at the training institution full-time in order to complete the required theoretical instruction.

The Correctional Centers and Social Reintegration/Community Corrections Offices are where the 70% on-the-job training takes place. Learners continue to receive a stipend throughout this time. The learners are in charge of finding their own lodging, food, and transportation.

The employer shall not give any pension fund, housing allowance, housing subsidy, danger allowance, medical assistance, or overtime during the theoretical and practical training. After the instructional learning phase, the workplace learning phase, the final submission of the Portfolio of Evidence (POE), and the successful completion of the external verification by the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority, the learner will be considered as competent (SASSETA).

Selected learners will be entitled to an allowance of R3 738,25 per month.
