City of Cape Town Metro Police, Traffic and Law Enforcement Learnership 2023
The City of Cape Town invites is searching for candidates who meet the requirements to apply for a learnership in Metro Police, Traffic and Law Enforcement. The City of Cape Town Metro Police, Traffic and Law Enforcement Learnership is launching an initiative to train 1000 recruits on a full-time Learnership Program in Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Metro Police for a duration of 18 months. This program aims to address the high levels of youth unemployment and provide opportunities for skill enhancement. Successful completion of the training will equip participants with valuable skills in Traffic Services and Metro Police, significantly increasing their employment prospects in the respective fields.

Unemployed youth aged 18 to 35, who meet the minimum requirements for a learnership in Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Metro Police, are invited to apply for this skills development opportunity. The Metro Police Academy will provide the training from December 1, 2023, until May 31, 2025. To successfully complete the program, trainees must fulfill the requirements for the Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement, as well as the Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Grade 12 qualification is required
  • Candidates must meet specific medical and physical fitness standards outlined below
  • An active Code B Driving Licence is mandatory
  • Candidates must possess the ability to work effectively in a team and handle stressful situations
  • A clean criminal record is a prerequisite
  • Applicants must be permanent residents within the jurisdiction of Cape Town.

Responsibilities:
Trainees must successfully complete the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement as well as Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012.

Please note:
All shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake and pass the following compulsory fitness test:

  • 2.4 km run (Males 11minutes and Females 13 minutes)
  • Push-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
  • Sit-ups (30 in 60 seconds)

Further Requirements:
Candidates will:

  • Candidates must successfully pass both a written assessment and an interview.
  • Candidates must pass a physical assessment.
  • Candidates must provide their fingerprints or identity numbers for a criminal records check, and no other forms of criminal clearances will be accepted.
  • Candidates must undergo a medical evaluation conducted by the City.
  • Candidates must take a compulsory drug test at a designated City testing venue, with additional random drug tests occurring periodically.
  • Candidates will undergo continuous psychological assessments.
  • Candidates must maintain specified levels of fitness and will undergo ongoing fitness assessments.
  • Candidates will be bound by the code of conduct of the Metropolitan Police Training Academy and must meet the pass requirements set by the Academy in accordance with relevant unit standards.
  • Candidates are obliged to reimburse the City in the event of unilateral withdrawal, failure to complete the course due to disciplinary reasons, or other reasons.

Special Conditions
The City has no obligation to provide permanent employment upon the completion of training. Candidates must undergo rigorous physical training at the Academy and receive instruction in compliance with the Firearm and Ammunitions Act. Once selected, candidates must wear a uniform, work in shifts, and be prepared to work in all weather conditions.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be informed via SMS or telephonically when to report to the identified venue to complete the compulsory tests
  • Shortlisted candidates are advised to bring their own gear, food and refreshments to the testing venue
  • Only applicants with no criminal record and no pending criminal cases, awaiting trial and/or pending sentencing cases will be considered for employment
  • Only applicants, who have undergone a compulsory drug test and are found to be drug free, will be considered for employment
  • There should be no expectation of receiving a job offer by applying for, and subsequently being tested and found competent
  • Canvassing by job applicants or, any other person on behalf of job applicants, for posts within the Council’s Service is prohibited and evidence thereof will disqualify the applicant’s application for consideration for appointment
  • If appointed, candidates are required to make themselves available to work as they are rostered, and are not permitted to have other employment or run a private business whilst in the employ of the City without the City Manager’s written permission
  • Random testing for possession and or consumption of drugs / alcohol / illegal substances may be carried out during the course of employment.
