About the Unitrans Job as Tyre Attendant 2026
Unitrans is searching for candidates who would like to obtain an employment opportunity as a qualified Tyre Attendant based in Johannesburg/Pretoria, Gauteng. The Tyre Attendant is responsible for conducting routine inspections of vehicle tyre components, including rims, hubs, wheel studs, and nuts, to identify signs of excessive wear, cracks, or other forms of damage. The role also involves examining tyre beads for defects, performing scheduled tyre condition assessments, and carrying out periodic tests to ensure tyres and related components remain safe, reliable, and fit for operation.
You will be required to perform the duties below:
- Ensures that all vehicle tyres remain in safe, roadworthy condition to support reliable operation and protect the safety of drivers and other road users.
- Handles the proper repair and replacement of tyre-related components, including inner tubes, rims, wheels, and other associated parts, while ensuring scrap metal is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Maintains tyre inflation according to manufacturer specifications and conducts weekly tyre stock checks to ensure adequate inventory levels.
- Performs roadside tyre repairs to minimize vehicle downtime and restore safe operation.
- Rotates tyres between designated wheel positions using the appropriate hand tools to promote even tread wear and extend tyre service life.
- Repairs punctures in tubeless tyres by applying approved sealing materials and installing rubber plugs with the proper hand tools.
- Removes tube-type tyres from wheels using rubber mallets, metal bars, or mechanical tyre-changing equipment while following safe work practices.

General Responsibilities as Tyre Attendant
- Inspect tyres regularly to identify wear, damage, punctures, or other safety concerns
- Remove, fit, and replace tyres on trucks, trailers, and other fleet vehicles using the appropriate tools and equipment
- Repair punctured or damaged tyres when safe and suitable to do so
- Check and maintain correct tyre pressure to ensure optimal vehicle performance and safety
- Rotate tyres according to maintenance schedules to promote even wear and extend tyre life
- Balance wheels and align tyres when required to improve handling and reduce premature wear
- Record tyre inspections, repairs, replacements, and maintenance activities accurately

- Operate tyre-changing equipment and workshop tools safely and correctly.
