About the Sasol Mainstream Bursaries 2026
Sasol is searching for applicants who would like to obtain financial assistance for their undergraduate or postgraduate studies with their Mainstream bursaries. The Sasol Mainstream Bursaries offer a comprehensive package that combines financial assistance with developmental support throughout the duration of the student’s studies. These bursaries are granted to individuals pursuing full-time university programmes in engineering and science disciplines.

Upon successful completion of their studies, beneficiaries may have the opportunity to join the Sasol Group through its Graduate Development Programmes. It is important to note that the bursary includes a work-back or repayment obligation. Additionally, applicants must have taken standard Mathematics, as Technical Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this programme.

To support South Africa’s economic development and address its internal demand for highly skilled graduates in science and engineering, Sasol offers postgraduate bursaries for M.Sc., M.Eng., and Ph.D. studies in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Applicants must have completed standard Mathematics, as Technical Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this programme.

These bursaries are awarded to support postgraduate research aligned with Sasol’s priorities and the country’s transition toward a sustainable energy and circular economy. The research focus is applied across several key core disciplines, as outlined below:

  • Chemistry – Environmental Science in the areas of Water, Waste or Air, or in Air with focus on dispersion modelling

Eligibility Criteria

The Sasol Mainstream Bursaries General Eligibility Criteria are as follows:

  • Award bursaries for standard degree programmes over a defined minimum duration (e.g., B.Sc. or B.Eng. completed over four years).
  • Require students to study full-time at a recognized and approved South African university; do not accept enrolment at distance-learning institutions such as University of South Africa.
  • Exclude bursaries for dual, combined, or hybrid degree programmes (e.g., B.Sc. Chemistry with Chemical Engineering, B.Eng. Mechatronics, or B.Sc. Environmental & Geology).
  • Accept only one application per student.
  • Ensure all information provided during the application process is accurate, as any incorrect details identified later may result in immediate withdrawal or termination of the application, bursary offer, or awarded bursary.
  • Maintain consistency in all submitted information throughout the application, interview, and subsequent stages, as any discrepancies will render the application or bursary null and void.
  • Submit all applications before the close of business on the specified deadline.
  • Provide complete applications, as incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.

  • Ensure eligibility as a South African citizen, as applications from non-citizens will not be considered.
