In order to prevent and combat anything that may threaten the safety and security of any community, the SAPS (South African Police Service) was established to investigate any crimes that threaten the safety and security of any community, ensure that offenders are brought to justice, and take part in efforts to address the underlying causes of crime.

As part of the Department’s strategic outcome-oriented goals, the department strives to provide police services that guarantees the safety of residents by reducing the number of serious criminal offenses, contact crimes, and trio criminal offenses, increasing activities to prevent and combat border criminal activity, and increasing the percentage of serious criminal offenses, contact crimes, and trio criminal offense cases that are ready for trial.

About the SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship 2024-2025
SAPS (South African Police Service) is offering a traineeship programme for South African applicants looking to obtain INSTITUTION PHASE as a qualified police. The SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship will require you to follow a basic training programme (Phase 1) at a Training Academy as Police Trainee. During this period, you will be entitled to a stipend of R4 500.

If you successfully finish your Basic Training (Phase 1), you may be entitled to an appointment as Constable, and you will be required to participate in a PROBATION PHASE after training in the academies with salary notch R216 033/annum. In addition to this, appointees will receive the applicable service benefits from probation phase.

Successful candidates will serve as Police Trainees on contract.

Core Functions: The core functions of the posts, on successful completion of the training, are as follows:

  • Uphold and enforce the law
  • Maintain public order;
  • Protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property; and
  • Prevent, combat and investigate crime.

Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP)
Selected applicants shall participate in a Basic Police Development Learning Programme (hereafter referred to as the PROGRAMME) for a period of 21 (twenty one) months.

The Programme shall consist of three phases:
1. Induction Phase
One (1) month at a designated police station for Matriculants/Graduates in other specializations & Law Graduates with stipend: R4 500/month

2. Basic Training Phase
Eight (8) months Basic Training at a designated SAPS Academy for Matriculants/Graduates in other specializations. Also Six (6) months for Law Graduates with stipend: R4 500/month

3. Probation Phase
After successful completion of the Induction and the Basic Training Phases, the police trainee shall be appointed as a member of the Service undergoing the Workplace Exposure Programme (12 months) with salary notch: R216 033/annum.

If you successfully finish your Basic Training Learning Programme trainees, you may be entitled to an appointment as Constable, and you will be required to participate in a 12-month probation period. However, this is only provided if you show exemplary progress throughout the programme.

During the Basic Training Phase of the Programme the service shall provide free training gear, meals, & accommodation to the police trainee. Trainees will also receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 21-month Basic Training Learning Programme.

Placement: Successful candidates will be trained at any SAPS Academy in South Africa and will be placed at any Police Station/Unit in South Africa after completion of the Institution Phase.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates interested in the SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship must fulfill an eligibility criteria before proceeding with their applications. Each of these items below will determine whether you have what it takes to proceed with this traineeship. To guarantee a successful application, candidates are advised to meet all of the following requirements. The SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship Eligibility Criteria are as follows:

  • Have permanent residence in the Republic of South Africa of which documentary proof must be furnished;
  • Be in possession of a grade 12 school certificate or equivalent qualification of which documentary proof must be furnished;
  • A valid driving license for at least a light motor vehicle will serve as an advantage;
  • Must be fluent in at least two of the official languages, with one of those languages having to be English;
  • You must be between the ages of eighteen (18) and thirty (35) years of age of which documentary proof must be furnished;
  • Have no prior criminal convictions or outstanding criminal cases, and agree to allow his or her fingerprints to be collected and background checks to be conducted on him or her if it is determined that he or she is appropriate for appointment;
  • Not to have any tattoos on their bodies that will be visible and/or incompatible with the goals of the Service;
  • You should prepare to take the oath of office;
  • Completing and passing a physical fitness evaluation is required; and must be Pass a medical examination and demonstrate competency in it;
  • Undergo a psychological examination, as established by the National Commissioner, and be deemed to meet the requirements for the position of police officer;
  • Be prepared to participate in any training that the National Commissioner determines is necessary;
  • You should be prepared to serve and receive training anywhere in the Republic of South Africa.

A applicant whose personal information appears on either the National Register of Sexual Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be rejected from consideration for appointment to the position in question.

SAPS (South African Police Service) has the right to offer or deny employment to anybody at its discretion. The selecting committee’s judgments are final and binding on all parties involved.
