SAPS (South African Police Service) is welcoming applicants to participate in their coveted Police Traineeship and obtain a wide array of new knowledge in the career field. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently recruiting entry-level Police Trainees and encourages applications from individuals of all races and genders. The program seeks young, energetic, intelligent individuals who are physically and mentally fit and committed to serving the nation through a career in policing.
Candidates who hold a three-year National Diploma or Degree—registered on the National Learner Record Database (NLRD) at NQF Level 6 or higher—in fields such as Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, or Information Technology may be eligible for placement in specialized units. These include the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services, and Crime Intelligence (CI).
Successful applicants will undergo training as prescribed by the National Commissioner at any designated SAPS Training Academy across South Africa. During the Basic Training Phase, trainees will be provided with training uniforms, meals, and accommodation at no cost. In addition, they will receive medical aid benefits throughout the 21-month Basic Police Development Learning Program. Upon successful completion of the training program, trainees may be appointed permanently to the rank of Constable within the SAPS.

Selected applicants will be entitled to a stipend of R4 500 per month (with additional benefits.) Upon completion of the programme, selected applicants will be entitled to R238 620 per annum.

- Submit a certified Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification as proof of education
- Demonstrate fluency in English and at least one additional official South African language
- Agree to take the official oath of office when required
- Commit to completing training as prescribed by the National Commissioner
- Refrain from having any visible tattoos while in SAPS uniform
- Avoid disqualification by ensuring you are legally allowed to possess a firearm
- Maintain a clean criminal record and have no pending criminal cases
- Avoid eligibility issues by ensuring you have not been dismissed from a previous job for serious misconduct
- Consent to providing buccal (DNA) and fingerprint samples for background screening
- Authorize thorough background checks as part of the application process
- Be ready to undergo full security clearance and vetting procedures
- Show a willingness to serve in any location across South Africa as assigned.
2. Academic Requirements
Applicants are required to hold at least one of the following academic credentials:
- A three-year post-secondary qualification (NQF Level 6 or above) in fields such as Criminal Law, Policing, Forensic Investigation, or related disciplines
- Any other three-year post-secondary qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher
- A Grade 12 certificate that meets the requirements for entry into a Bachelor’s Degree program
- A Grade 12 certificate that qualifies for admission into a Diploma program
- A Grade 12 certificate that allows entry into a Higher Certificate program.
