As part of the Department’s strategic outcome-oriented goals, the department strives to provide police services that guarantees the safety of residents by reducing the number of serious criminal offenses, contact crimes, and trio criminal offenses, increasing activities to prevent and combat border criminal activity, and increasing the percentage of serious criminal offenses, contact crimes, and trio criminal offense cases that are ready for trial.

About the SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship 2022-2023
SAPS (South African Police Service) is offering a traineeship programme for South African applicants looking to obtain basic training as a qualified police. The SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship will require you to follow a 9-month basic training programme (Phase 1) at a Training Academy as Police Trainee. During this period, you will be entitled to a stipend of R4 500.

If you successfully finish your Basic Training (Phase 1), you may be entitled to an appointment as Constable, and you will be required to participate in a 12-month probation period. However, this is only provided if you show exemplary progress throughout the programme.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates interested in the SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship must fulfill an eligibility criteria before proceeding with their applications. Each of these items below will determine whether you have what it takes to proceed with this traineeship. To guarantee a successful application, candidates are advised to meet all of the following requirements. Failure to do so will cause disadvantageous consequences towards the overall result of your applications. Be sure to jot down these items for personal reference.

The MSAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship Eligibility Criteria are as follows:

  • Undergo a psychological and Integrity examination, as established by the National Commissioner, and be deemed to meet the requirements for the position of police officer
  • Has a Senior Certificate/National Senior Certificate/National Certificate (Vocational) and has a Bachelor of Science Degree or any other fields of studies (at least 3-year National Diploma/Degree) recorded on the National Leraners’ Record Database on NQF Level 6 or higher
  • Have no prior criminal convictions or outstanding criminal cases, and agree to allow his or her fingerprints to be collected and background checks to be conducted on him or her if it is determined that he or she is appropriate for appointment
  • You must be between the ages of eighteen (18) and thirty (30) years old
  • Pass a medical examination and demonstrate competency in it
  • Be prepared to participate in any training that the National Commissioner determines is necessary
  • You should be prepared to serve and receive training anywhere in the Republic of South Africa
  • Completing and passing a physical fitness evaluation is required
  • Not to have any tattoos on their bodies that will be visible and/or incompatible with the goals of the Service
  • Must be fluent in at least two of the official languages, with one of those languages having to be English
  • You should prepare to take the oath of office
  • Be a citizen of the Republic of South Africa.

Closing Date
Applications for the SAPS (South African Police Service) Traineeship must be submitted before the closing date on 11 March 2022.

In accordance with the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No 32 of 2007) and the Children’s Act, 2005, candidates who have been shortlisted for appointment to specific defined roles will be subjected to a background check (Act No 38 of 2005). A applicant whose personal information appears on either the National Register of Sexual Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be rejected from consideration for appointment to the position in question.

SAPS (South African Police Service) has the right to offer or deny employment to anybody at its discretion. The selecting committee’s judgments are final and binding on all parties involved.
