About SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute)
The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) is an establishment that assists in the development of the skills and knowledge base required to ensure the success of “Blue Economy” initiatives. SAIMI serves the people of South Africa and the African continent by encouraging skills development, education, training, and research that contributes to the development of the blue economy.

In addition to lobbying and promotion of South Africa’s marine industry, SAIMI’s primary responsibilities include the coordination of education, skills, and training programs, research and development, and serving as an information centre on maritime issues. This is predicated on a strong collaboration and stakeholder participation framework to ensure that all role players participate in the advancement of SAIMI’s work and contribute their resources and capabilities to the development of South Africa’s maritime sector, as well as the development of the country’s maritime sector.

About the SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute) Bursaries 2024
SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute) is offering financial aid for female South African students interested in pursuing Maritime studies. The SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute) Bursaries are a program that will be concentrating on providing Black female students at the Undergraduate Honours, Masters, and PhD levels of study at the South African International Maritime Institute.

As an awardee, you will get all of the assistance you need to complete your academic degree. Awardees will be entitled to financial coverage that will cover a bunch of student-related costs, such as tuition expenses, textbooks, accommodation costs, and an allowance for meals. Additionally, you will be entitled to participate in any conferences related to SAIMI and maritime events.

Eligibility Criteria

The SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute) Bursaries Eligibility Criteria are as follows:
1. General Requirements for All Students

  • Officially recognised as a citizen of South Africa
  • Must be a female candidate
  • Originating from a group that’s previously disadvantaged (e.g. Black Africans, Indians, Coloureds, any group defined under the Black Economic Empowerment Act of 2003)
  • Currently pursuing or planning to pursue a Maritime related qualification
  • Currently pursuing or planning to pursue your studies at an accredited South African tertiary institution
  • Fulfill the criteria in the “missing middle” financial category (your parents must have an income of R350 000-R600 000 every year).

2. Special Requirements for Undergraduate Students

  • Currently between 17-25 years old
  • Has officially finished your Matric qualification or currently pursuing your Matric qualification
  • Must have obtained at least an average aggregate score of 70%, if you are currently pursuing your studies
  • Must have obtained A and B symbols for your Matric qualification.

3. Special Requirements for Honours and Masters Students

  • Must have finished a minimum of 1 year of your academic studies
  • Must have obtained at least an overall average aggregate of 70% at an Undergraduate level, and at least an overall average aggregate of 65% at a Honours level.

4. Special Requirements for PhD Students

  • Must have finished a minimum of 1 year of your academic studies
  • Must have obtained at least an overall average aggregate of 60% when you completed your Master’s degree.

Once you have downloaded the application form, please fill with your most relevant responses by typing them into the appropriate areas. All of the personal information you submit should be accurate and correspond to your actual circumstances.

Additionally, you will need to prepare the following documents:
1. General Documents for All Students

  • A certified copy of your Identity Document
  • A provisional letter of acceptance that’s been officially issued by your tertiary institution (must be on institution’s letterhead)
  • An official quotation that states your complete tuition expenses and textbooks (if you are already registered, and must be provided on institution’s letterhead)
    • For undergraduate students: if you have not registered in your tertiary institution yet, you can submit this quotation after your registration
  • Certified copies of your parents/guardians’ Identity Documents (please provide a death certificate if they are deceased)
  • Legitimate proof of household income from your parents or guardian (please provide pay slips if they are employed, an affidavit if they are unemployed, as well as a legitimate proof of pension/grant if required).

2. Special Documents for Undergraduate Students

  • A certified copy of your Matric qualification
  • A certified copy of your latest results
  • A certified copy of your complete academic transcript (if you are studying at the moment)
  • A brief letter of motivation that does not exceed 500 words

3. Special Documents for Honours and Masters Students

  • Certified copies of all of your qualification and academic transcripts that are relevant
  • A brief letter of motivation that doesn’t exceed 800 words, and must be based on one of the provided research topics.

4. Special Documents for PhD Students

  • Certified copies of all of your qualification and academic transcripts that are relevant
  • A brief letter of motivation that doesn’t exceed 800 words, and must be based on one of the provided research topics.

All of these documents should be included in your application dossier. Incomplete dossiers will automatically be disqualified from the registration.

Closing Date
Applications for the SAIMI (South Africa International Maritime Institute) Bursaries must be submitted before the closing date on 17 November 2023.
