About the Robben Island Museum

Robben Island Museum is offering Maritime Apprenticeships for South African Cadets who wish to be a part of the entity’s dedicated Port Operations department. Conducted in Cape Town, the Robben Island Museum Maritime Apprenticeships is a remarkable opportunity that opens your eyes to the museum’s work environment from an entirely technical-based department. Selected apprentices will gain a stronger understanding of their line of work by accomplishing a number of duties. Not only are you gaining work-related exposure through the apprenticeship, but you are also taking part in the preservation of one of South Africa’s most renowned cultural sites.

Selected engineering cadets will work their way through the apprenticeship before being eligible for their Chief Engineer Port Operations qualification. Apprentices can only succeed in the opportunity by performing these duties below:

  • Following all of the apprentice’s training sessions
  • Finishing their training record books in a timely manner
  • Gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical working experience within the real-time working environment
  • Maintaining all vessel equipment and upholding the ship board’s routine
  • Attaining their qualification during the allotted time
  • Providing necessary assistance with the vessels repairs or equipment maintenance.

The Robben Island Museum Maritime Apprenticeships is offering two kinds of programmes (with their own specific requirements) to the general public, which are:

Maritime Apprenticeship Engineering Programme x6

  • Physically and medically healthy for the apprenticeship
  • Acquired all S3 subjects within the Marine Engineering field
  • Valid copy of final results slip
  • Proven fluency in both spoken and written English
  • Preference will be offered to applicants who:
    • Have accomplished their National Diploma in Marine Engineering
    • Unemployed applicants who have prior experience in sea going.

Maritime Apprenticeship Deck Programme x4

  • Passes that SAMSA eye test
  • Physically and medically healthy for the apprenticeship
  • Officially recognized as an ND Maritime Studies Deck cadet
  • Accomplished their S1, S2, S3, and S4 subjects with flying colors
  • Provides their valid copies of S1, S2, S3, and S4 results slips.

Note: the Robben Island Museum Maritime Apprenticeships offers preference for South African citizens who are unemployed during the time of application.

More importantly, your Curriculum Vitae should contain contactable referees that the committee can reach out to in case there is a sudden need for following up.

Closing Date
Applications for the Robben Island Museum Maritime Apprenticeships must be submitted before the closing date on 15 February 2021.

The selection does not tolerate any late submissions. Candidates found to be making their submissions past the deadline will not be regarded by the selection committee.
