About MSDS (Military Skills Development System)
The Military Skills Development System, or simply referred to as the MSDS, is a programme that is a part of the South African National Defence Force. Providing entry-level opportunities to young South African individuals, the establishment has been conducting programmes since 2003. Recruits are chosen to promote the deployment of their forces and creating a better sense of their military. Striving to achieve military readiness within their communities, the MSDS hopes their initiative helps to enlarge the reserves they already have within the South African military.

About the MSDS (Military Skills Development System) 2024 – South African Army
MSDS (Military Skills Development System) is offering an in-depth programme for candidates who are interested in becoming a part of the South African Army. Through the Military Skills Development System, the South African Army is giving a once-in-a-lifetime chance for local youths to serve for the army under a 2-year contract. The purpose of this programme is to rejuvenate the South African National Defence Force.

All selected candidates will be required to participate in specific mustering, in which you will be involved in a Training Unit and finish your Basic Military Training. During the first year, you will gain functional training, followed by internal/external deployment in the second year.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates interested in the MSDS (Military Skills Development System) must prepare themselves during the registration period. To become a successful applicant, you will need to fulfill the eligibility criteria prepared below. Each of these items will determine whether you have what it takes to become a successful candidates for the programme. Failure to meet everything will not entirely ruin your chances of getting accepted, but it might influence your progress.

The MSDS (Military Skills Development System) Eligibility Criteria are as follows:

  • Officially recognized as a citizen of South Africa (does not have dual citizenship)
  • Currently between 18-22 years old
  • Has successfully passed their Grade 12 qualification with average aggregate score of 50% or Level 4 (Mathematics and Science are preferable)
  • Graduates that are up to 26 years old (must have 360 credits)
  • Has an Admission Point Score of 17 excluding Life Orientation (LO)
  • Displays impressive leadership qualities
  • Is not tarea bound
  • Does not have any past criminal records or pending cases
  • Can fulfill the medical fitness requirements as needed in the programme:
    • Minimum height:
      • Females: 148cm
      • Males: 155cm
    • Minimum weight
      • Females 48kg
      • Males 52kg.

Important Note: candidates who are registering for Music must be up to 26 years old and have accomplished their Grade 6 Music Qualification from an accredited tertiary institution. Candidates must be able to play a music instrument and read music fluently to participate in the auditions.

First off, candidates must download the Official Application Form.

Once you have the application form, please pay attention to the instructions and skim through the queries before filling them in. Make sure the information you provide is correct to your current conditions.

Additionally, candidates must prepare the following documents:

  • Your most updated Curriculum Vitae
  • A certified copy of your Identity Document
  • A certified copy of your Matric Certificate
  • Certified copies of your tertiary qualifications
  • N6 with transcript N4 and N5.

All these documents must be included in your application dossier. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the selection committee.

Application dossiers must be submitted to the postal address mentioned above. Any applications that are sent via email or fax will be automatically disqualified.

Closing Date
Applications for MSDS (Military Skills Development System) 2024 – South African Army the must be sent before the closing date on 28 February 2023.

All of your applications must be submitted before the closing date mentioned above. It is advisable that you prepare your documents and application form way before the deadline so that you have enough time to evaluate its contents before submission.

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified by the selection committee. If you do not hear back from them by the very latest 31 December 2023, we regret to inform you that you have not been accepted by the programme.

Please be kindly informed that shortlisted candidates are expected to participate in all psychometric and medical evaluations. Furthermore, you will be obliged to have your qualifications and criminal records verified.

MSDS (Military Skills Development System) reserves the rights to make an appointment or not during the recruitment process. All decisions made by the selection committee are final.
