FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships 2021
FirstRand is offering international postgraduate scholarships to academically-talented students who plan on making positive contributions to the world. The FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships is a series of opportunities that motivate young generations of students to pursue their ideal education. Not only will you be entitled to generous funding – you will also receive fantastic learning opportunities that goes outside of your comfort zone.
There are five (5) kinds of FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships available:
1. FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship
The FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship is a programme offered to South African citizens who wish to pursue a postgraduate education outside South Africa. Candidates are free to choose whichever field of study as well as their preferred international institution.
2. FirstRand Foundation Scholarship
The FirstRand Foundation Scholarship is a programme offered to South African citizens who originates from Previously Disadvantaged Backgrounds. Like the previous scholarship, this programme is offered for candidates who are pursuing their postgraduate studies outside South Africa. Candidates are free to choose whichever field of study as well as their preferred international institution. Selected candidates will be entitled to a funding of up to R900 000.
3. FirstRand Oxford African Studies Scholarship to the University of Oxford
FirstRand Oxford African Studies Scholarship is a programme that started from a collaboration between the African Studies Centre and the University of Oxford. Awardees of this scholarship will be entitled to a full-funded study to pursue their Master’s Degree. Additionally, you will be studying in the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford, with a housing at Wadham College.
Candidates are required to register for an MSc Degree in African Studies and be officially accepted by the University of Oxford. Should you have any specific enquiries or concerns about this programme, send in an email to [email protected].
4. FirstRand FNB Fund Oxford Education Scholarship
The FirstRand FNB Fund Oxford Education Scholarship is a programme that started from a collaboration between the Department of Education and the University of Oxford. Like the previous programme, awardees of this scholarship will be entitled to a fully-funded study for a Master’s in Education at the University of Oxford.

5. FirstRand FNB Fund Scholarship for International Postgraduate Study in Education
The FirstRand FNB Fund Scholarship for International Postgraduate Study in Education is a programme that provides a funding of up to R900 000 for your postgraduate education. The scholarship is accepting application from South African citizens who wish to pursue their education outside South Africa at their desired international institution.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates interested in the FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships are more than welcome to give these opportunities a chance. Before you begin your registration, make sure you fulfill each of these items in the eligibility criteria. This criteria will determine whether you are qualified enough for the programme or not. Failure to fully comply to these requirements will get you disqualified from the registration process.
The FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships Eligibility Criteria are as follows:
- Possess impressive academic track records
- Displays leadership skills
- Has a strong character
- Heavily involved with communities
- Dedicated to making positive contributions towards the world
- Candidates must return to South Africa for a total period of five years at minimum
- Preference will be offered to candidates who are below 35 years old.
Application Instructions

Candidates are required to create an account on the application portal. This account will store all of your personal details that are required to process your registration.
Due to the sensitive nature of the account, candidates are advised to keep their accounts secure. Never share your account credentials, especially your password, to anyone else. This is to prevent any possible hackings from other people.
Your applications should contain all of the necessary documents and reference letters. Candidates are expected be officially registered into their desired university before sending in their applciations.
Applications must be processed through this online platform. Submissions made through other methods, such as email or fax, will not be entertained by the selection committee.
Closing Date
Applications for the FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships must be submitted before the closing date on 04 March 2021.
The selection committee has absolute zero tolerance for late applications. Candidates discovered to be making their submissions past the deadline will not be acknowledged.
Announcements will be published by the selection committee before the end of May 2021.
