About the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries 2024
The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture is offering bursary programmes in several different fields for academically-talented students in South Africa who wish to pursue studies in heritage related programmes. The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries is a wonderful opportunity that aims to uplift students in the country to continue their education with financial support. The department hopes that with this initiative, awardees of the bursaries will grow up to become positive contributors towards their local societies.

The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries is currently available for the following fields:

    • Archives and Records management
    • Fine Arts
    • Collections (cultural & natural) management (excluding Nature Conservation)
    • Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
    • Conservation of the built environment including preventive conservation (this includes only a field of study and not a course/subject of study)
    • Anthropology (exclusively with a focus on forensic/medical anthropology)
    • Digital Heritage
    • History
    • Archaeology (exclusively with a focus on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensic)
    • Palaeontology
    • IKS or Courses that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and S.A. Living Heritage

    Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
    History
    Fine Arts

    The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries provides coverage for the following items:

    • Study expenses: full coverage of total amount of study expenses
    • Prescribed study materials
    • Electronic devices not costing more than R10 000. This will be paid according to receipt/invoices of three quotations
    • Accommodation costs of up to R50 000 (where applicable)
    • Daily meals of up to R18 500 maximum (where applicable)
    • Transportation: R10 000 maximum amount (NB where applicable)
    • The bursary will be awarded to the maximum value of R110 000/student and will be paid directly to the higher institution of learning
    • The total amount of prescribed books will be covered.

    Note: please be kindly informed that funds are directly transferred to your respective institutions.

    Eligibility Criteria
    Candidates interested in the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries must fulfill an eligibility criteria before proceeding with their registration. Each of these items below will determine whether you have what it takes to be qualified enough for the programme or not. To guarantee successful application, make sure you fulfill all of these items below. Failure to do so might cause disadvantageous consequences towards the overall result of your applications.

    The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries Eligibility Criteria are as follows:

    • Officially recognized as a legitimate citizen of South Africa
    • Displays impressive academic track records or (Grade 12 if you are a 1st year student)
    • Studying/have been accepted to study any one of the aforementioned study fields (Undergraduate/Postgraduate qualification)
    • 40 years old/younger
    • NOT be currently full-time employed within the private sector, government, or state agencies
    • NOT earn more than R350 000 per annum
    • NOT be receiving any other bursary funding
    • Students who are beneficiaries of other bursaries or donors for the 2024 academic year will only be considered if tuition fee at the said university or institution exceeds the DSAC’s threshold by at least 10% upwards.

    All prospective students who wishes to apply for the Heritage Bursary are advised to scan all the documents required so that they can upload them at the time of applying.

    Before you apply for the Heritage Bursary, please reflect on the following questions:
    1. Have you provisionally/been admitted to study in the 2024 academic year?
    2. Does your qualification fall within the fields of study highlighted above?

    Interested candidates are required to send in their proposal to the email address provided above. Don’t forget to address it to Ms Reinette Stander, Deputy Director: International Conventions and Legislation, Department of Sports, Art and Culture. Alternatively, you can address to to Mr Maano Muhadi, Deputy Director: Heritage.

    Make sure that your proposal clearly indicates why you deserve to be a part of this bursary programme. This will help you increase your chances of getting accepted by the selection committee.

    By sending in your applications, you are hereby giving permission to have your personal information utilized by the selection committee for registration purposes.

    Applications will be subjected to further evaluation and vetting procedures to verify the validity of candidates. Anyone found to be falsifying any aspects of their applications will be disqualified from the programme.

    Submissions must be made to the email address mentioned above. Applications sent through other methods, such as fax or hand delivery, will not be regarded by the selection committee.

    Closing Date
    Applications for the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Bursaries must be submitted before the closing date on 31 January 2024.

    The selection committee has absolute zero tolerance for late applications. Anyone discovered to be making their submissions past the closing date will not be considered during registrations.
