Dis-Chem is currently on the search for applicants who would like practical work experience in a professional setting through their internship programme. You will be required to perform the duties below:

  • A pharmacist intern is permitted to perform all services or tasks related to the scope of practice for a registered pharmacist’s assistant (post-basic) under the direct supervision of a pharmacist in a pharmacy
  • This includes the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances
  • The intern can assist in the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of both non-sterile and sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to formulas and Standard Operating Procedures approved by the responsible pharmacist
  • The intern may also help in the manufacturing of non-sterile or sterile medicines or scheduled substances following the same guidelines
  • Responsibilities include re-packaging medications as needed
  • The intern will manage the distribution and control of stock for Schedule 1 to Schedule 6 medicines or scheduled substances
  • They can order medicines and scheduled substances up to and including Schedule 6, based on instructions from someone authorized under the Medicines Act to make such purchases
  • The intern is responsible for reading and preparing prescriptions, selecting, manipulating, or compounding the medicines, labeling, and supplying the medications in appropriate containers, all based on the pharmacist’s interpretation and evaluation of the prescription
  • They provide instructions on the correct use of supplied medicines
  • The intern is also tasked with providing information to individuals to promote overall health
  • For educational and training purposes, a pharmacist intern may perform all services related to the scope of practice of a pharmacist under direct supervision in a pharmacy
  • They must accurately interpret prescriptions and act professionally and responsibly, adhering to legal requirements set by the South African Pharmaceutical Council
  • The intern is responsible for capturing prescription details accurately and verifying patient information in the system
  • They ensure that medications are picked, packed, and labeled correctly, while being aware of common dosages and significant drug interactions
  • Providing precise instructions to patients on the correct use of supplied medicines is also a critical responsibility
  • The intern must stay informed about changes in medical aid procedures and the requirements for claims and dispensing
  • All prescriptions entered into the system must be checked for accuracy and signed by a pharmacist
  • They will advise and assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front shop
    Following up with patients regarding prescription tracking reports as requested by the dispensary manager is also part of their role
  • The intern explains all medical aid costs to patients, including differences between medical aid and cash or shelf prices, if applicable
  • They process all paperwork necessary for accurately submitting claims to medical aids
  • The intern must correct any errors on prescriptions rejected by medical aid
  • They ensure authorization for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medications
  • Maintaining customer profiles in the system is another key responsibility
  • The intern should pay attention to any messages in the customer profile and take appropriate actions
  • Reporting low or out-of-stock levels and stock discrepancies to the dispensary manager is essential
  • They assist with scheduled stocktakes and exercise control over stock and assets
  • Housekeeping must be maintained in accordance with Dis-Chem standards
  • Adherence to Dis-Chem Policies and Procedures as well as Standard Operating Procedures is mandatory
  • They must comply with Health and Safety rules and regulations
  • Finally, the intern should follow Dis-Chem’s uniform and personal appearance policy.
