Cummins is seeking for candidates who would like practical work exposure withing the Engine Workshop Technician field through their qualified apprenticeship. The Cummins Engine Workshop Technician Apprenticeship requires you to perform the duties below:

  • Support workshop operations by assisting with general tasks to ensure smooth and efficient workflows
  • Maintain cleanliness and order by cleaning, inspecting, and disassembling to promote a safe and organized environment
  • Master repair techniques by learning Standard Repair Times (SRTs) and following established procedures to perform basic repairs and maintenance effectively
  • Ensure accurate documentation by assisting with work completed forms, time sheets, and other records for proper data management
  • Develop skills by completing training aligned with both business needs and personal growth requirements
  • Care for tools and equipment by keeping them clean, properly maintained, and ready for use at all times
  • Follow health and safety compliance by adhering to Health, Safety, and Environmental policies to prevent risks and maintain a safe workplace
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by proactively reporting issues or incidents to your supervisor for timely resolution.

1. Basic Qualifications

  • Obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) from the South African government school system, also known as the matriculation certificate, with Grade 12 as the matriculation grade, plus:
    • Earn an N3 (Nated Certificate) in Engineering Studies with passes in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, and Diesel Trade Theory / Motor Trade Theory / Mechanotechnology.
    • Complete an N4 (Nated Certificate) in Engineering Studies with passes in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Mechanical Draughting, and Mechanotechnics.
    • Achieve an N6 (Nated Certificate) in Mechanical Engineering with passes in at least four subjects such as Mathematics, Mechanotechnics, Mechanical Drawing and Design, Power
    • Machines, Fluid Mechanics, Physics, Strength of Materials, or Supervisory Management.

  • Obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) from the South African government school system, also known as the matriculation certificate, with Grade 12 as the matriculation grade, plus an NCV Level 4 qualification offered at TVET colleges with passes in Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Automotive Repair & Maintenance, Mathematics, English First Language, Life Skills, and Computer Literacy.

  • Obtain an NCV Level 4 qualification offered at TVET colleges with passes in Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Automotive Repair & Maintenance, Mathematics, English First Language, Life Skills, and Computer Literacy.

2. Work Competencies

  • Demonstrate proficiency in product repair and maintenance by repairing and servicing mechanical or electrical products, disassembling and reassembling engines or power generators, and inspecting and replacing parts to reduce customer costs
  • Apply strong mechanical knowledge by adhering to Cummins and industry standards, following safe work procedures, and using mechanical principles to diagnose and repair products effectively and safely
  • Execute effective diagnostics by translating customer complaints into troubleshooting plans, utilizing specialized equipment and software to identify and resolve issues, validating completed repairs, and documenting outcomes for payment and record-keeping
  • Maintain a valid motor vehicle driver’s license to fulfill the job requirements.
