About the City of Cape Town Technician Learnership 2025
The City of Cape Town is opening up the chance for applicants to obtain theoretical knowledge and practical skills as a full-fledged technician through their learnership. The City of Cape Town Technician Learnership is a fantastic opportunity to build a strong foundation in this field. The City of Cape Town Technician Learnership requires you to deliver the following outputs:
- Perform pre-commissioning tests, maintenance evaluations, audits, and fault repairs on Power System RTUs to ensure effective Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) operations.
- Install, maintain, and manage telecommunication systems—including fiber, copper, microwave, radio, GSM, and network configurations—to support electricity infrastructure communication between substations, control centers, and facilities.
- Plan, design, and oversee high-voltage, medium-voltage, and low-voltage distribution systems, including project management and customer connection processes.
- Install and maintain security systems, such as access control, intrusion alarms, CCTV, electric fences, and fire alarm systems, to protect electricity infrastructure.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of 11-132kV substations, including switchgear, transformers, batteries, and auxiliary equipment, as well as underground cables and overhead lines.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and update the digital control system that manages the Power Distribution Network, ensuring continuous and efficient functionality.
- Assist operational and planning teams by extracting, analyzing, and presenting historical network performance data for improved decision-making.
- Conduct audits on Power System Protection equipment to verify compliance with performance and quality standards related to protection, automation, and control system operations on medium- and high-voltage networks.
- Manage electrification projects for informal settlements and oversee LED retrofitting for streetlight infrastructure under the Distribution Engineering Support Services division.
- Perform cable fault pre-location, positive identification, and pre-commissioning tests on low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) cables to ensure reliability and safety.
- Oversee and manage projects involving the conversion of overhead power lines to underground systems, as well as consumer-requested relocations of existing electrical services.

1. SCADA Field Services
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or have outstanding in-service training requirements.
2. Telecoms
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering, have in-service training pending, or hold a National N Diploma.
3. Engineering
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or still require in-service training.
4. Electronic Security Support Services (ESSS)
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering, have outstanding in-service training, or hold a National N Diploma.
5. High Voltage
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or still need to complete in-service training.
6. Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS)
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or have outstanding in-service training.
7. Protection Performance Audit and Settings
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or still require in-service training.
8. Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)
Must have successfully completed a National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering or have in-service training yet to be completed.
